Kelly Engineering is currently recruiting for a (Contract to Hire) (Packaging Engineer) job located in Charleston, SC.

General Description of this Job:

  • This position designs, tests, and implements packaging designs that are an integral part of the organization’s Product Development and continuous improvement process. This individual develops designs, and tests standards and guidelines for developing packaging solutions for the organization’s products. They work with internal resources and packaging suppliers to achieve functional packaging goals.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Perform duties and responsibilities at customer site which will include interacting closely with customer personnel; requesting approvals on designs and obtaining assistance with other process steps

  • Be a change leader that will drive improvements at customer site(s) with customer personnel

  • Lead projects from concept to completion; be able to complete and share all facets of the project including design approvals, cost benefit analysis, work scope for suppliers, funding approval, etc.

  • Become familiar with and follow all internal applicable standards, specifications and procedures for packaging and material handling design and implementation

  • Plan and direct activities concerned with design and development of protective packaging containers

  • Analyze engineering drawings and specifications of product to determine physical characteristics of item, special-handling and safety requirements, and type of materials required for container.

  • Consult with establishment's purchasing and production departments to determine costs and feasibility of producing proposed packaging.

  • Develop or directs development of sketches, specifications, samples, and written analyses of proposed packaging in order to present design for approval.

  • May confer with customers or sales representatives to create contracts.

  • Advise employer or customers on efficient packing procedures, innovations in packaging materials, and utilization of sealing and fastening devices.

  • Standardize packaging – Maintain and develop expendable and returnable packaging standards. Bring standard packaging options to each of the product groups. Create packaging part numbers

  • Develop customer packaging – Work with the customer team Logistic Planners to develop, test and purchase unique customer packaging while respecting a timeline

  • Cost reductions – Travel to the supplier plants to identify and implement cost savings within their packaging team. Reduce costs through redesigning and consolidating existing and future purchases. Track savings to reach an annual objective

  • Innovation – Introduce and trial innovative products/materials/processes in the region

  • Manage packaging supply base – work with purchasing to develop a packaging supply base. Duties include supplier audits, developing strategic partners, managing the size and depth of the supply base, etc

  • Budget planning – Assist with packaging budget planning. This includes cost estimation, fleet size calculations, market trends, etc.

  • Testing & Verification – When required, conduct packaging testing including verifying test specifications and reports

  • Designs, develops, and tests a wide variety of containers used for the protection, and handling of products.

  • Develop material handling and Parts Protection Specifications, Special Packaging Instructions and Coded Packaging Data

  • Determines packaging specifications according to the nature of the product, cost limitations, legal requirements, and the type of protection required, considering need for resistance to such external variables as moisture, corrosive chemicals, temperature variations, light, heat, rough handling, and tampering.

  • Provides solutions to a variety of technical problems of increasing scope and complexity as assigned.

  • Contributes to the completion of milestones associated with specific projects.

  • Functions as a Liaison primarily to internal company contacts, (inter-organizational teams) and occasionally with outside customer contacts on routine matters.

  • Oversee and manage complete packaging development process, including the creation of packaging designs, prototype development, and performance testing.

  • Troubleshoot new and existing packaging problems involving designs, materials and processes and provide creative, timely, and cost-effective solutions.

  • Analyze engineering drawings and specifications of product to determine physical characteristics of item, special handling, environmental and safety requirements, and types of materials required for packaging

  • Must be able to manage multiple projects simultaneously.

  • Work closely with global suppliers, engineering, product management, operations, and sourcing.

  • Identify and implement cost saving initiatives related to packaging materials, labor, efficiency, transportation, and storage

  • Work closely with Engineering to optimize packaging supply base for cost, lead time, quality, regionalization, standardization, supply assurance, and compliance with customer, regulatory, and internal requirements

  • Specify and recommend efficiency tools and test methods to develop and validate packaging designs

  • Work with the manufacturing department to insure that the packaging designs are optimized for the end user – minimizing non value added work of opening and collapsing containers

  • Develop and implement comprehensive test plans to ensure that packaging exceeds customer specifications

Required Technical Skills/Experience:

  • 3D Modeling Software; CATIA or SolidWorks

  • FEA/Simulation experience in 3D Modeling Software

  • Microsoft Office; Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint

  • Good understanding Mechanical design and Weldments

  • Good understanding of Ergonomics and Safety Principles
