Minimum Requirements

A high school diploma and one year of related experience is required. Custodial or recycling experience preferred. Experience in waste diversion and reduction initiatives and programs preferred. Must be able to follow oral and written instructions. Supervisory experience preferred. Candidates with an equivalent combination of experience and/or education are encouraged to apply.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Knowledge in requirements of Charleston County Recycling Program and SCDHEC rules and regulations would be helpful. Skill with electronic devices, such as iPhone and iPad is preferred. Must have valid SC driver’s license and have the ability to learn to drive large box truck to transport recyclable materials, equipment &/or personnel when needed. Experience driving trucks or CDL preferred. Must be able to effectively and professionally communicate information both orally and in written form.

All employees at the College are expected to perform their jobs in a safe manner in accordance with best safety practices as prescribed by their department, the Office of Environmental Health and Safety, and the Occupational Health and Safety Administration training as provided by the Physical Plant at the College of Charleston.

Additional Comments Regarding Position

Works under limited supervision. Must have initiative and exercise independent judgment and diplomacy to educate campus personnel in the proper sorting of recycling, composting and landfill waste.

Job Duties

Activity

  1. Leads crew of recycling team leads, recycling workers and student workers and assists with the collection of recyclable materials from all College offices, buildings, & facilities. Follows the regular pick-up routes as scheduled to pick up recycled materials in a timely manner. Responds to requests for additional pick-ups of recycled materials. Follows proper safety practices. Responds to assigned work orders with a sense of urgency and ensures appropriate and timely resolution. Operates mobile electronic device to access, update, and complete work orders to include all appropriate information to reflect action taken, labor hours, parts, materials and other historical and cost related items.

  1. Assists with ensuring that non-recyclable materials are not co-mingled with recyclable materials. Ensures that all recyclable materials are properly segregated into appropriate categories according to Charleston County Recycling requirements.

  1. Assists with loading, securing and transporting collected recyclable materials to the appropriate Charleston County Recycling Drop Off Facility. Drives State vehicles to pick up and transport recycled material. Assists with cleaning and sanitizing the truck used to collect and transport recyclable materials. Assists supervisor/management in collecting payment from the Charleston County Recycling Drop Off Facility and gathering data to track College recycling efforts, as needed.

  1. Assists with delivering the appropriate number and type of bins and ensures correct placement in designated spaces in College facilities as determined by the volume of recyclables and waste generated. Assists with cleaning and sanitizing the collection bins/containers inside and out and coordinates with custodial services, as needed, for additional area clean-up. Responsible for ensuring that furniture, floors, walls and surrounding work area is protected while work is being performed and thoroughly cleaned up when work has been completed.
